Afghan Slipper Socks

Quality fair trade ethnic goods

In the late 1960's, an enterprising Afghan merchant took a traditional Buskasi sock from the northern town of Tashkergoan, adapted the shape to give it a heel and then knitted the socks using the unravelled wool from Aid donated sweaters and blankets. Later a soft leather sole was added and they began to appear on the market stalls in the west.

Alastair was one of the principle importers of slipper socks in the 1970's up until the Russian invasion and war in the country. Now he has regained contact with his old friends and is once again importing directly from Afghanistan.
